On Sunday, October 21, 2013, Omaha Symphonic Winds and violist Brett Deubner gave the American Premiere of Houston Dunleavy’s concerto for viola and wind ensemble “A Kiss Before the World’s End.” The concert was performed at St. Andrew’s United Methodist Church in Omaha, Nebraska to an appreciative audience that included collegiate viola students and their instructors as well as the general public.

Brett Deubner’s solo performance was masterful in portraying the “angst and tension” as described by one audience member. Dunleavy’s concerto is dedicated to his former music student, Daniel Pearl, the Wall Street Journal reported who was captured and killed in Pakistan in 2002. Pearl’s birthday was in the month of October, and his family created the Daniel Pearl World Music Days that encourages concerts dedicated to promoting diversity and understanding throughout the world.
At 3:00 PM, on Sunday, October 21, 2012, OMAHA
SYMPHONIC WINDS will present the American Premiere of Houston Dunleavy's
concerto for viola and wind ensemble
"A Kiss Before the World's End" at St. Andrew's United Methodist
Church (15050 W. Maple) in Omaha, Nebraska. The violist is international
soloist Brett Deubner who performed the world premiere in Melbourne last
December.

Houston Dunleavy, composer of the concerto, was a
visiting composer at James Madison University, The Cleveland Institute of
Music, Ball State University, the University of Florida, and Georgia State
University, and now is a university music instructor and composer in Melbourne,
Australia.

While at American University in Washington, DC,
Dunleavy was journalist Daniel Pearl's voice teacher. Houston writes,
"When the news of Danny’s death came through in 2002, I, like thousands of
musicians and journalists around the world, was rocked. It took me a long time
to think about placing my reactions to all of this into music. At first, I
wanted to write a work for violin, as Danny had been a violinist. However, when
I was approached by violist Brett Deubner for a new work, I thought that a
concerto for viola might have a timbral quality that could be just as exciting
as the violin, but with an extra somberness that only the viola could
convey."

The concerto, a juxtaposition of ethnic musical
elements, begins with a keening melody on the penny whistle, while the
second section of the work, played by viola, bongos, and the entire ensemble,
presents constant interjections from a harsh, even barbaric set of chords which
represent the intrusion of barbarism into Danny’s life. This instability
of rhythm comes to an end with a lament for viola and brass chorale. Over
descending chords, one can hear the piccolo’s keening and the Middle Eastern
scales in the viola, bringing the work to a quiet close.

The title, "A
Kiss Before the World's End," Dunleavy says, "reflects the
premature end of something more than the life of a good man, as tragic as that
was. Instead, it acknowledges the end of a world for those left behind as well,
and the pain and loss such an end leaves in its wake." The American
Premiere is a registered event of the 11th annual Daniel Pearl World
Music Days.

Brett Deubner, soloist for the American Premiere, is
one of this generation’s most accomplished violists, and has inspired worldwide
critical acclaim for his powerful intensity and sumptuous tone. He has
performed across the United States, in nine countries on four continents.
Recent performances include concerto appearances with the New Jersey Symphony
Orchestra, the Knoxville Symphony, the Filharmonic del Quito, the New Symphony
of Sofia and the Kiev Camerata in Ukraine. Brett Deubner’s commitment to
extending the repertoire for the viola is made evident by collaborations with
some of today’s greatest composers such as Samuel Adler, Lalo Schifrin, Andrew
Rudin, David Del Tredici and several of this generation’s leading young
composers. To date, over 25 viola concerti and numerous solo and chamber works
for viola have been written for him.

After The Thunderer (1993)
Mvt. II from Symphony on Themes of John Philip Sousa

Ira Hearshen (b. 1948)

Teaching Music Through Performance in Band, Vol. IV, p. 900. Here listed as the entire Symphony on Themes of John Philip Sousa as grade 6. NBA , WRP V (out of VII), publisher V (LudwigMasters, $75.00). 7.5 minutes, ABA form, 110 measures, quarter=48.

Lowell Graham, retired conductor of The United States Air Force Band, tells the story of how Hearshen came to compose After The Thunderer. Graham and Hearshen were sitting up talking late one night when Graham suggested that Hearshen, a Hollywood arranger and orchestrator, write a suite for concert band based on themes of famous American marches.

Hearshen, who has a special passion for Mahler’s Symphony No. 3, began musing over Graham’s suggestion when he had a stroke of inspiration.
Calling Graham at 2:30 in the morning Hearshen said that he would write a slow, extended adagio in the style of the finale to the Mahler 3 but based upon themes from Sousa’s The Thunderer. Hearshen began singing the idea over the phone to Graham who says that he “immediately sat up in bed, wide awake. Ira now had my complete attention.”

So successful was After The Thunderer that Hearshen composed three more movements based on the Sousa marches, Washington Post, Fairest of the Fair, and Hands Across the Sea.

Cast in a slow ABA movement, the melody is an augmentation of the trio of The Thunderer. Tonalities pass from A-flat Major through A Minor, E-flat Major, and returning to A-flat Major. There are no difficult rhythms or technical passages. However, the Euphonium and Trombone I do have notes up to A-flat, and there is a considerable endurance challenge for Trumpet I in the upper register.

Several YouTube videos are available for viewing and comparing interpretations. By all means compare After The Thunderer to the Finale of Mahler’s Symphony No. 3. I don’t think a legitimate interpretation of the Hershean can exist without taking the Mahler into consideration.

Regarding suitablity for OSW, The writing progresses well from beginning to end. There are no exposed passages for 2nd or 3rd part players, but solo passages for bassoon, oboe, and trombone require mature players with beautiful tone, and control and endurance for the 1st trumpet. I believe that OSW could perform the piece with our limited rehearsal schedule, and that many of our players would find the music rewarding.
Saxhornhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12720758252402637970noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4815326322763666172.post-27968769025242081462012-04-23T14:43:00.000-07:002012-04-23T14:53:48.355-07:00Lit Study - Blue Shades by FrankTicheliLiterature Study

Blue Shades (1996)
Frank Ticheli (b. 1958)

Teaching Music through Performance in Band, Vol. 2, p. 547. Here listed as a grade 6. NBA 5, WRP VI (out of VII), publisher, 5. 11 minutes. ABA form, 430 meaures.

Frank Ticheli is Professor of Composition at the University of Southern California. He earned degrees in composition from Southern Methodist University and the University of Michigan. Among his composition teachers are: William Albright, George Wilson, Leslie Bassett and William Bolcom.

Ticheli writes band music in many grades of difficulty, and I first learned of him through “Fortress” for grade 3 bands, and then the widely-played “Cajun Folk Songs.” “Blue Shades” was commissioned by a consortium of universities and high schools, and contains several jazz/blues styles throughout. The slower middle section features the clarinet in a bluesy/torch song style, occasionally sultry and then “dirty.” Some of the closing section reminds me of the hard driving super heroes movie themes like "The Incredibles."

“Blue Shades” has featured solos for clarinet, bass clarinet, and oboe. Only the clarinet, during the slow center section, has notes in an extreme range. Among the jazz techniques utilized in the piece are pitch bending, flutter tonguing, and straight vs. swing eighth notes. Ticheli uses compositional techniques of hemiola (duple feeling in triple meter), cross rhythms, and syncopation.

Harmonically, Ticheli uses no actual blues progressions, but freely incorporates blues notes of flatted 3rds, 5ths, and 7ths, and pentatonic scales. The work is pitched in G with both major and minor modes.

This is an exciting work and musically satisfying to rehearse and perform. The piece is complicated enough to require significant rehearsal, and so, doesn’t appear to be accessible for OSW at this time. So, “Blue Shades” goes on the shelf for a while.Saxhornhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12720758252402637970noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4815326322763666172.post-77864126714562129982012-04-09T16:06:00.008-07:002012-04-09T16:16:01.130-07:00List of Titles for the Literature StudyHere’s my list of ten works for wind band that I’ve decided to include in this literature study. See the last post for criteria used for selection. Of course, there are other pieces that could be included, but, in the words of Katsumoto, “we have made a good start.”

After The Thunderer, Ira Hearshen
Blue Shades, Frank Ticheli
Fantasies on a Theme By Haydn, Norman Dello Joio
Fascinating Ribbons, Joan Tower
Huntingtower, Ottorino Respighi
Sea Songs, Thomas Knox
Southern Harmony, Donald Grantham
Symphony for Band, Donald E. McGinnis
Theme and Fantasia, Armand Russell
Watchman, Tell us of the Night, Mark Camphouse

I listened to as many as I had recordings and discovered other recordings on iTunes. At this point I have no scores to any of the pieces. Here’s what I’ve discovered so far:

After the Thunderer was composed as an adagio in a similar vein to the adagietto in Mahler’s Third Symphony. May conductors first play Sousa’s The Thunderer and then Hearshen’s piece so that audiences can discover his compositional technique. I viewed a performance of this on YouTube and had an immediate attraction to the piece. At first listen the work would be attractive to our musicians and accessible to our audience.

Blue Shades is a very jazzy/bluesy piece in ABA form. There is a constant rhythmic drive in the A sections with several intricate rhythms in the low woodwinds. It might be technically too difficult for 4 rehearsals. But, the work has become a standard with university and military ensembles, and some advanced high school bands have also performed it. There is an online score viewable for this piece.

Fantasies on a Theme by Haydn is a theme with three variation/fantasies by Norman Dello Joio. Having just performed his Variants on a Mediaeval Tune this fall, which many of the musicians really liked, this piece would seem a winner for us. A friend recommended this piece, since we both have a growing admiration for Dello Joio’s compositions.

Fascinating Ribbons is a short fanfare-like composition. I see this piece programmed a lot, so included it on our list. Joan Tower is a well-known composer in the orchestral world. It’s nice to have a piece by her in the wind band world, too.

Huntingtower was written in the 1930s just before the passing of Respighi, the famed composer of The Pines of Rome. Sometimes the word “Ballad” is used in the title on programs. I’ve never seen a score to the piece, but have listened a few times. The work is intriguing and seems to have compositional depth. I’ll need more hearings to evaluate the piece. Perhaps this is an indication of the piece’s worth, but maybe also that it’s too difficulty for 4 rehearsals. There’s a wonderful recording by Col. Lowell Graham and the USAF Band on the album Songs of the Earth.

Sea Songs is completely unknown to me, except by title. I believe that Knox was an arranged for the Marine Band, and others speak well of his compositions. At this point, I’ve never heard the piece, so I’ll have to place this late in the study to give time to procure a score and recording.

Southern Harmony is well-known to many band directors. The work has 4 movements based on the shaped-note hymnbook “Southern Harmony.” The open and peculiar harmonies sound like classic “fa-so-la” used by singing teachers like William Billings. There are pockets of fasola in the mid-south yet today. Donald Grantham has set 4 tunes in an extended suite. The fourth movement sounds technically difficult, while the first three sound very accessible. This piece rents for $300, although the second movement, “Wondrous Love,” is available separately for $150. A complete score sells for $55.

Symphony for Band, was composed in the 1950s by my former college band director Donald E. McGinnis, and is published by Barnhouse. We could never get him to program the piece, although I think later bands may have. The work uses set theory and serial composition technique in its three movements. The symphony is not as difficult as other similar works, so maybe we can honor Dr. McGinnis with a performance. I don’t have a recording or score, so this one will have to fall later in the study.

Theme and Fantasia is another set of variations, this one using serial technique. The composer, Armand Russell, studied at Eastman with Howard Hanson and others, and taught composition at the University of Hawaii. While working on my doctorate the wind ensemble performed this piece, and I wish I had paid better attention. It comes highly recommended by Dr. Wayne Gorder and has a difficulty level of IV, so, accessible to musicians and audience alike. Again, will have to be a late study.

Watchman, Tell Us Of The Night. IMO this is the best piece that I have heard by Mark Camphouse. It is introspective and weighty. He makes good use of woodwind timbres. The chorale tune to "Come, Ye Thankful People, Come" occurs late in the work. This piece will come early in the lit study. It’s definitely accessible to the musicians, and maybe the audience, too. We’ll have to determine whether it’s too complicated for 4 rehearsals.

So, we’ll tackle Blue Shades first because we can view a score when listening to our recordings. I’ll report on my study next week.Saxhornhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12720758252402637970noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4815326322763666172.post-42758309856645535032012-04-02T10:11:00.004-07:002012-04-02T10:27:52.892-07:00Wind Band Literature ProjectOmaha Symphonic Winds, a select 55-member adult concert band, is completing its third concert season and making plans for its concerts next year.

The ensemble, formed in 2009, consists of band directors, music teachers, retired military musicians, and area professionals. OSW is conducted by its founder, Dr. William Hall, a former trombonist with The United States Army Band (Pershing’s Own) and with The United States Army Field Band. Most recently Hall was director of bands at Dana College in Blair, NE. Dr. Hall holds degrees from The Ohio State University, The Catholic University of America, and Kent State University.

Omaha Symphonic Winds programs outstanding works for symphonic band and orchestras by recognized composers. OSW seeks to present polished performances on a limited number of rehearsals, so the choice of literature is critical. The musicians need to be challenged while enjoying the pieces, and the audience needs to be able to relate immediately to most of the pieces on a program.

The ensemble’s repertoire through three seasons includes standard symphonic band works, such as: Gustav Holst’s First and Second Suites, Dmitri Shostakovich’s Festive Overture, Malcolm Arnold’s Four Scottish Dances, Clifton Williams’ Symphonic Dance, No. 3 (Fiesta) and Festival, Darius Milhaud’s Suite Française, Norman Dello Joio’s Variants on a Mediaeval Tune, Robert Jager’s Esprit de Corps, Samuel Barber’s Commando March, Alfred Reed’s Hounds of Spring and Russian Christmas Music, Sir Arthur Sullivan’s Pineapple Poll, Vaclav Nelhybel’s Symphonic Movement, and Jack Stamp’s Pastime.

OSW has also performed several orchestral transcriptions, such as: Finale to the Kalinnikov Symphony No. 3, Finale to the Tchaikovsky Symphony, No. 4, Finlandia by Jean Sibelius, Overture to The Barber of Seville by Rossini, Mannin Veen by Haydn Wood, Early Light by Carolyn Bremer, and Leonard Bernstein’s Overture to Candide.

As OSW considers it’s fourth concert season, and the need to extend its list of repertoire, it seems incumbent on me, as conductor, to learn more pieces that are within our rehearsal/performance ability. I began thinking of developing a systematic process for discovery and a method of documenting the process.

Here’s an outline of the process I will use.

Limitations of the Study: The music selected for study must be:
a. Not well-known to William Hall
b. In difficulty level grades 4-5
c. Serious literature by respected composers
d. Listed in the National Band Association Select Music List, and/or
e. Listed in the Wind Repertory Project
f. Consistent with mission of OSW, that is:
i. playable in 4 rehearsals
ii. symphonic band as opposed to wind ensemble in nature
iii. attractive to mature musicians
iv. accessible to audiences

Method of the Study:
g. Locate and list possible works from NBA/Wind Band Rep lists
h. Prioritize the list
i. Seek out recordings (already in hand/iTunes download)
j. Acquire scores
k. Search for reviews/notes/score studies
l. Select one piece per week
i. listen repeatedly (at least once per day)
ii. view the score while listening
iii. read reviews/notes/score studies
iv. evaluate the piece for suitability

Blog about experience.

Program selected pieces.

In regards to my blogging goal, today is the first post. I hope to post once weekly with my findings. Perhaps next week’s blog will list the works I’ve chosen for the study. Please feel free to recommend works and to send me .mp3 recordings and .pdf scores. My story is: Signed-up, Read, Investigated, Reflected, Blogged, Applied.

What does the career future hold for the next 3-5 years. I currently work part-time as a specialist, and apart from the library, conduct and manage a very talented adult concert band. My career future involves juggling both entities. Although pushing 65, the magical age of medicare and retirement, I could continue to develop my library career by completing my MLS degree and applying for full-time positions. However, to do that would be to limit the growth of my "volunteer" musical organization--certainly a strong "bliss" area for me.

Nearing retirement, and with a growing musical organization, I've decided to remain at the part-time specialist level, and continue my professional development through activites like CPD 23 and those sponsored by my state library association. I need the hours-off to manage all the business for my adult band, and to study the musical scores I have to conduct. This in itself is professional development.

From the CPD 23 program I have gained exposure to some software, like "Jing," that I have already put to good use, and insights into presenting oneself throuh resumes and job interviews. I will use concepts contained in the latter as I promote my adult band. Other relevant "things" I have used are Mentorship, Evernote, LinkedIn, and facebook and Twitter social media. Perhaps the most significant topic for me was in developing your personal brand.

This program has been valuable to me as a person, it has covered a variety of topics, and presented some new ideas. I'm very glad that I took part.Saxhornhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12720758252402637970noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4815326322763666172.post-57004108527421036642011-10-17T09:09:00.000-07:002011-10-17T09:33:31.092-07:00CPD 23 - Thing #22 - VolunteeringWhat a great idea! Volunteering in a profession where you hope to work! Get practical experience that you can use on your resume, and gain valuable professional references for your application. Outstanding!

When I began working at the library I was fortunate NOT to have to volunteer. However, with two graduate degrees, I did start at the library aide level, and worked my way up to specialist over 2 years. I also notice that several of our aides, desire a career in library work and are working toward a library school degree. Fortunately we live in a large enough city to have several branches with the need for lots of entry level workers.

As I thought about volunteering in my own life I recognized that I did volunteer to help establish my music teaching and music performance career. That is, unpaid performing or unpaid teaching that hopefully allows one to gain experience and develop skill toward a professional position.

There were the inevitable high school all-star bands and orchestras that were and honor to be a part of. These groups provided lots of rehearsal and performance opportunities led by skilled directors and teachers who help the musicians master the music. There were the peer teaching experiences, even membership in the Future Teachers of America.

Part of collegiate teacher education is professional observation and student teaching. These are valuable learning experiences and provide valuable staffing for the schools. Not only did we "volunteer," we actually paid tuition to serve and develop experience and skill. We were rewarded by making professional friends from our supervising teachers and by gaining professional recommendations for our job applications.

Even as an adult, degreed and working in the profession, there are opportunies for volunteering. Membership in community and other adult bands helps keep music alive in many towns, especially serving the senior population that attends most of the concerts. Music teachers can learn new music, revisit music they haven't played in a number of years, and keep alive their own love of performing.

In music there is a term often associated with symphony orchestras that especially is germane to this discussion: Philharmonic - "for the love of music." Banding together to produce music, just for the love of the art. This is the height of volunteerism in music.Saxhornhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12720758252402637970noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4815326322763666172.post-27346931740118799052011-10-17T08:49:00.000-07:002011-10-17T09:05:02.772-07:00CPD 23 - Thing #21 - Promoting Yourself - Discovering Strengths<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgm3jif95F2b7d5EPJ0OL1jz93cp7z1VQwB-Bi65CJB5pP5iuFT81QEkJPyMZ_4Ci-qtFUoXWO3WDHjDBLfUaec09NvvomExgWSK6eSMvkOilF3e9lsMU_DstgwC3gPtnHwSrtmZ_PnIW8/s320/strength.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5664490334473641666" />
I agree with the CPD 23 authors about discovering your strengths to find career satisfaction. I think during my career I have always tried to "follow my bliss." After twenty some years of public school and college teaching I had lost my bliss and decided to go in a different direction.

During my transition phase I came across the "Strength Finder" series and took the test. My top strengths confirmed what I had always known about my self, and that I often tried to fit my square peg into a round hole without ultimate success. My strengths include: learner, ideation, context, intellection, and input. It was shortly after discovering these strengths that I applied to work at the public library, a career that really seems to fit me, and one where I have recovered my bliss.

If you haven't taken the Strength Finder test grab one of the books, read and take the test. It may be a significant reaffirmation of who you are at your core.Saxhornhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12720758252402637970noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4815326322763666172.post-81614532830508042192011-10-01T10:38:00.000-07:002011-10-01T10:50:22.406-07:00CPD 23 - Thing #20 - Routes to LibrarianshipMy route to working in a library is somewhat unusual, but I'm sure there are library staffers who have similar elements in their story.

I came to work in the library following a 25 year career as a musician and music educator. I had taught bands in public schools and colleges and was kind of burnt out. I was fortunate to have a sabbatical from my institution and viewed lots of options. Knowing that I wasn't ready to retire, but that I didn't want to return to teaching, I thought I could put my research skills to good use at the library.

I began working at the public library as an aide responsible for assisting customers with their computer use. I was promoted to circulation clerk, and at my branch began to learn reference. Since, I have been promoted to library specialist and am responsible for reference, managing the floating collections, and staff training on eReaders and associated software.

I feel very much at home in the public library world. I like working with individuals and small groups, I like the library's approach to managing staff, and I like to hear "thank you" from the patrons--something rarely heard during my educational career.Saxhornhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12720758252402637970noreply@blogger.com0
